Bruno
Rodriguez-Mendez

I build from silicon to software. I co-founded Bloom, led narb.cc to 1,000+ monthly users, and led the chip team whose ADC was picked for tapeout. I also win hackathons, sometimes solo.

01 Things I've built

jen-zombie demo table #71 at SteelHacks with the handheld controller and AR screen 🏆 Winner ×2 · Solo

SteelHacks XIII · Press Start + MLH Best Use of Solana

jen-zombie

An AR game in Chrome where the room you point your phone at becomes the level. Gemini captions the scene, Nemotron designs the world, and ElevenLabs voices the mobs. You play it with an ESP32 controller I built. I made world generation 16× faster.

ShapeUp hair preview rendering a new cut on Bruno's own scan 🥇 1st, Gemini Track

HackPrinceton 2026 · now a startup

ShapeUp

Builds a 3D hair model from a single selfie. We turned three CV/3D research papers into a product in 36 hours, and it now has 10 paying users. My part was speed: tuning the Gaussian splatting model cut render time by over 75%.

Top-level layout of the 8-bit SAR ADC ⚡ Selected for tapeout

IEEE SSCS Chipathon 2026 · team lead

Hungry Chippos: 8-bit SAR ADC

I led Brown Open Silicon's 6-person team. Our 833 kS/s ADC on GF180 ranked 5th of 30+ teams selected for tapeout. I owned the StrongARM comparator and top-level integration, and went from novice to finished layout in a month.

The Wyzer rig: Wyze camera on a Raspberry Pi with ultrasonic and PIR sensors 🔐 Firmware RE

HackHarvard 2026

Wyzer

Fall detection with zero video leaving the home. I pulled a Wyze camera's firmware off its flash chip, booted it in QEMU, and swapped its paywalled cloud AI for a local model. I also rooted a Tapo camera over UART.

Chart: the fine-tuned 2B model at 91.9% accuracy versus FinBERT at 88.9% 🧠 91.9% accuracy

Hack Knight 2026

Knight-Daddy

I fine-tuned Qwen3.5-2B with QLoRA on Brown's GPU cluster. It beat a fine-tuned FinBERT by 3 points on financial-tweet sentiment (p = 5e-6). Then I ran six pre-registered trading backtests and reported the results honestly, including the null ones.

Top of the Aloft glove, wired with red and yellow leads to the ESP32 and IMU 🧤 Solo build

BigRed//Hacks 2026

Aloft

A glove that works as a 3D modeling studio. Tilt to fly, point to place, and speak to build. An ESP32 and IMU stream over BLE to a web app and a native iOS app, and two gloves can build together.

A Barn Owl camera node: Raspberry Pi night-vision camera on a flexible mount 🦉 I built the hardware

DivHacks 2026 · team of 4

Barn Owl

Rat surveillance for NYC. I built the $30 Raspberry Pi night-vision camera nodes and a ~100k-frame training set. I also built the in-map AI assistant and the iMessage agent.

Chompixel's first-person 3D mode 🎮 You're on it

This website · 4+ years, open source

Chompixel

My portfolio as a multiplayer pixel game. It has live players over WebSockets on EC2, PvP, a global leaderboard, zombie hordes with A* pathfinding, and a hand-written raycaster 3D mode.

02 Experience

  1. Co-Founder & Engineer · Bloom

    Sept 2025 – Present
    Bloom logo

A smart plant pot that senses light, humidity, soil moisture and temperature and turns them into care guidance. It runs on an ESP32 inside a LiPo-powered enclosure that went through 10+ Fusion 360 iterations. We secured $13.8K in Brown funding: the Startup Fellowship ($10K), a DSI Seed Grant ($3.8K) and a Maker Grant ($500).

  2. Software Engineer · Vibe

    Aug 2025 – May 2026

Built the proof of concept for an event-booking platform that went on to attract $100K in angel commitments and onboard 2 partner venues. Also built the mobile app with the founding team in TypeScript and Expo.

  3. Quadrotor Researcher · Brown UTRA

    Dec 2025 – May 2026
    3D isosurface of quadrotor downwash

Built a 3D wake model of quadrotor downwash from PIV data in MATLAB. It matched measured velocities to within ~0.001 RMSE using spline and piecewise-Gaussian formulations.

  4. Project Lead & SWE Intern · narb.

    Jun – Nov 2025

Promoted to project lead after 3 months. Led narb.cc to over 1,000 monthly active users worldwide on Next.js, React Native, Convex, Clerk, EC2 and Stripe, and coordinated SWEs, mobile devs, designers and founders.

  5. AI Researcher · Algoverse

    May 2025 – Jan 2026

Built 12 mock Python APIs, covering Amazon, Gmail, X and others, to benchmark LLM function calling. That included multistep, multiturn and audio tool calls, with automated dataset generation.

  6. Officer · Brown Open Silicon

    Dec 2025 – Present

Built brownopensilicon.org with Next.js, Firebase and Blender. Led the club's first web-dev cohort and its Chipathon team.

  7. Founder · BruBru LLC

    Jul 2024 – Jul 2025

Turned e-waste into 12 solar-powered fans and 10 power banks made from recovered vape batteries, all given to the homeless community in Central Florida.
